The supply of Chipperbec potatoes is transitioning from a storage crop in Washington to a new crop in Bakersfield, California. Chipperbec chipping potatoes are known as more of a foodservice item and Chipper Inc Potato sells the potatoes under its Chipperbec brand.
"We'll begin in California in about three more weeks," Ely Trujillo of Allied Produce Co., LLC., adding that the transition is happening as per the usual timing. "The quality looks excellent and we're excited about starting these fields." Production will stay in this region until about September.
Request for Chipperbec potatoes
As for the foodservice and processing demand for the Chipperbec potato, it is strong and continues to grow annually. So much so that this year, Chipper Inc. will also introduce a new retail program this summer. "It will be under our Chipperbec label and it will be the first time we have this variety of potato available to the public," says Trujillo. "We get a lot of requests on our website by the general public for these potatoes." The product will first be available in retail outlets on the West Coast and will eventually move to national distribution.
Meanwhile pricing on the potato is similar to last year to slightly higher than last year due to increased input costs.
A new retail product isn't the only change for Allied Potato. In February, it also opened a new office in Las Vegas (under the name Allied Produce Co., LLC) with Trujillo as its general manager out of that office serving retail, foodservice, and wholesale customers.
