Woolworths reintroduces Happy Chop Tearless Onions

Woolworths reintroduces Happy Chop Tearless Onions after a successful initial trial in New South Wales and Victoria. These onions, developed by Nunhems, a BASF vegetable seeds business, are designed to be less irritating and sweeter. They contain fewer compounds that cause eye irritation, which further decrease post-harvest, in contrast to traditional onions where these compounds increase. This innovation is the result of 25 years of research and development, employing natural breeding techniques to achieve the tearless trait.

Happy Chop Onions are marketed under the name Sunions in the US and UK, and are grown and packaged in South Australia by Dolling Produce. Woolworths plans to offer these onions, alongside other varieties, during the onion season, providing consumers with a choice for their culinary needs. The onions are available in 500g packs at Woolworths supermarkets, excluding Western Australia and Tasmania, until October or while stocks last.
