Baby mango is increasingly strengthening its reputation as one of Colombia's most globally recognized fruits. Claudia Cervantes, the manager of Superfruit, notes that this variety, unique to Colombia, has successfully entered markets in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. This success is supported by ongoing production in Magdalena and Tolima, allowing for nearly year-round availability.

Cervantes notes that cultivation in Tolima plays a vital role in supplementing the natural harvest from Magdalena. "While the northern region mainly produces in the first half of the year, Tolima focuses its cultivation in the second half, ensuring a steady supply that customers value. Additionally, the partnership with Tropifresh, which specializes in maritime exports, and Superfruit, a leading supplier of baby mango by air to Europe, strengthens this supply chain."

"European consumers respond positively to the baby mango's distinctive taste and aroma, which drives sales even when the product is perceived as small or premium," she stated.
The United Kingdom remains an important market after Brexit, though it has become more price-sensitive. "It is a market characterized by low prices and a preference for smaller, 'mini' mangoes. Additionally, it is more accepting of minor aesthetic imperfections, which helps maintain the product's competitiveness," Cervantes stated.
The U.S. and Canada are showing interest but are still discovering the fruit, which they typically associate with varieties like Ataulfo, Tommy, or Kent. Exports to the U.S. involve irradiation, adding additional logistical steps.
The Middle East has demonstrated a high level of receptivity. "Once they taste baby mango, they want it all the time," Cervantes stated. However, it is also one of the destinations most affected by logistical costs due to its distance.

"The FOB or CPT prices of Colombian baby mangoes are fairly consistent across markets, with base values ranging from 10 to 12 euros per box, excluding freight. The main difference lies in transportation costs: An air shipment to Spain can cost around $1 to $1.25, while destinations like the Netherlands or London can cost between $245 and $280, and Croatia about $270," she said.
Besides these costs, clearance fees, importers' and supermarkets' margins significantly raise the final price. "That is why, as producers, we try to keep prices affordable so more people can try the fruit," stresses Cervantes.
