Avocado demand slows as December pricing shifts

Avocado, blueberry, cucumber, bell pepper, strawberry, and tomato movement continues to shift across US ports of entry, with trading activity and pricing varying by region and product. Below is a condensed overview of current trends.

Avocado
Movement from Mexico crossings through Texas is expected to remain about the same. Trading 32-48s are very slow; others are fairly slow. Prices of organic 48s and 70s are generally unchanged; others are lower. Hass cartons 2 layers 32-48s are mostly 22.25-24.25, 60s are mostly 21.25-22.25, 70s are mostly 18.25-20.25, and 84s are mostly 17.25-19.25; organic 48s are mostly 34.25-35.25, 60s are mostly 33.25-36.25.

Blueberry
Movement from Peru imports via Miami, Philadelphia, and New York is expected to remain about the same. Trading is moderate. Prices of organic produce are slightly higher than conventional produce is slightly higher. Flats 12 1-pint cups with lids, large are mostly 22.00-24.00; organic large are mostly 40.00-44.00. Movement from Mexico through Arizona, California, and Texas is expected to increase seasonally, with insufficient supplies to establish a market.

Cucumber
Movement from Mexico through Nogales is expected to increase. Trading is moderate. Prices of large items are higher; others are slightly higher. 1 1/9-bushel cartons medium are mostly 13.95-14.95, fair quality 10.95-12.95, ordinary 5.95-6.95; small 6.95-8.95, and large mostly 12.95. Movement from Texas is expected to remain about the same, with prices generally unchanged. Movement from Central and South Florida is expected to remain about the same, with waxed medium mostly 18.35-19.35.

Green bell pepper
Movement from Coachella Valley is expected to decrease seasonally. Trading is moderate. Prices of large items are slightly lower; others are lower. Extra-large are 16.95-18.95, large 15.95-17.95. Movement from Central and South Florida is expected to remain about the same, with jumbo and extra-large mostly 14.35-15.85. Movement from Mexico through Nogales is expected to remain about the same, with extra-large 14.95-16.95 and large 12.95-14.95.

Strawberry
Movement from Mexico through Texas is expected to increase seasonally. Trading is very active. Flats 8 1-lb medium are mostly 36.00. Movement from Central Florida is expected to increase seasonally, mostly 32.00-36.00; organic 40.00-44.00. Movement from Oxnard and Santa Maria is expected to increase, with medium mostly 28.00-32.00 and organic 38.00-40.00.

Tomato
Movement from Mexico through Texas is expected to remain about the same. Trading early was fairly active, late fairly slow. Vine Ripes 4x4-4x5s are mostly 13.95-15.95, 5x5s 12.95-13.95, 5x6s 11.95-13.95. Movement from Nogales is expected to increase seasonally, with supplies too limited to establish a market. Movement from Otay Mesa is expected to decrease slightly, with 4x4-4x5s mostly 13.00-14.00 and 5x5-5x6s mostly 11.95-12.95.
