Spain seizes over 2 tons of cocaine hidden in banana containers

Spanish authorities have dismantled a cocaine import network using fruit containers from Ecuador, following a joint operation by the Guardia Civil, Policia Nacional, and customs officials from the Tax Agency. The investigation focused on produce shipments arriving from South America, including containers carrying bananas and other fruit.

During inspections in Valencia, officers located a container holding just over two tons of cocaine packaged in 2,000 units. Four arrests were made on November 17. The detained group is linked to several companies involved in importing drugs concealed within fruit consignments.

Police also seized €10,000 (US$10,900) in cash, knives, two high-end vehicles, computers, mobile phones, a banknote counter, a metal detector, a frequency inhibitor, and various documents.

The investigation began two years ago after authorities intercepted two containers concealing more than three tons of cocaine. Multiple suspects were identified. In November 2024, more than 500 kg of cocaine was found hidden in a container imported by a Valencian company through the port of Vigo, although no arrests were made at that time.

Authorities continued monitoring other companies involved in similar trade patterns. This month's arrests and seizures follow the culmination of that extended inquiry into drug shipments hidden among fruit imports.
