Perfection Fresh and Opal have begun trialling a plastic-free packaging format for Calypso mango multipacks in selected Coles stores in Victoria. The trial uses kerbside-recyclable cardboard as an alternative to single-use plastic.
The cardboard packs include open cutouts that allow shoppers to see and handle the fruit while improving air flow around the mangoes. The design also incorporates a carry handle and a compact structure intended to support transport and storage.

Liz Pridham, innovation lead at Perfection Fresh, said the partnership aims to respond to demand for recyclable options. "We are always looking for ways to respond to increased demand for more sustainable options, so partnering with Opal has truly helped us enhance sustainability from the farm all the way to consumers' kitchens," she said. She added that the trial format provides clear branding and allows customers to touch the fruit before purchase.
Opal's General Manager – Corporate Business, David Pointer, said the project forms part of the company's work to replace plastics with cardboard solutions. "Innovation is critical in the fresh produce industry, especially when it comes to packaging. At Opal, we're dedicated to replacing single-use plastics with sustainable cardboard packaging that delivers performance, convenience, and showcases branding," he said.
He noted that the packaging has been developed to protect the fruit, maintain freshness, and offer a practical carry option.
The recyclable Calypso mango three-packs are available in selected Coles outlets in Victoria throughout summer.
