Onion standstill in anticipation of overseas developments

"The Italian white onion has run out, and those who still have some have saved them to meet contracts, but they are not to be found on the open market," says Italian onion specialist Matteo Freddi. "As for the red ones, there's not much left to sell and they're being priced very high. Yellow onions, on the other hand, are available in adequate quantities and we will be able to reach the end of May without too much difficulty."

"The yellow onions come from Italy, where the quality is good, and from Holland and Austria. The sizes 6-8 are sold in wholesale markets in 10 kg boxes for about 1 € per kg, or even a little more. If Egypt were to allow exports next week, there would be a good quantity on the market at a competitive price. However, the quality of Italian yellow onions is generally superior."

"The 2023/24 season has been a memorable one for anyone that has had good yields and quality. Growers who did not suffer from bad weather conditions achieved excellent results, such as in certain areas of Piedmont and Fucino. In other areas, torrential rains, floods, hail and then drought led to disappointing yields and quality. Many received around €0.60 per kilo for their onions, compared to €0.15 per kilo in other seasons."

The shallot will be available until the end of June and the quality looks excellent. The Borettana onion, on the other hand, has had problems with its shelf life and is currently unavailable.
