Adriaan van Belzen, Daily Onions:

"With the arrival of the first Egyptian red onions, it seems the period of shortages and high prices is coming to an end"

"The Egyptian onion season is slowly approaching, which is about three weeks earlier than last year. Last year, the initial focus was on yellow onions from Egypt, partly because we were experiencing a so-called shortage. This year, the situation is quite different, and we have seen high prices for red European onions," explains Adriaan van Belzen of Daily Onions, who visited the Egyptian cultivation areas last week.

"Although the red onions in Europe are not yet depleted and the prices here are now starting to come under pressure, I expect Egypt to be able to supply enough this year. It seems that the era of shortages and high prices is definitely coming to an end," says the onion trader. "In hindsight, everything is easy, but you can see that stakeholders in the onion trade are increasingly interested in keeping prices high. However, eventually, the truth will come out."
