Responding to export ban by India

Sri Lanka turns to China for onion imports

In response to an export ban by India and Pakistan, Sri Lanka has pivoted towards China for the importation of onions, announced by Trade Minister Nalin Fernando. The bans have led to a domestic price increase, prompting this shift. "Big onions, there is a shortage in India and Pakistan," Fernando stated. "Now we are importing from China."

Previously, Fernando mentioned that due to the escalating prices, a different variety, Rose Onion, would be imported. Sri Lanka's onion cultivation, protected by import taxes and characterized by its seasonality, relies on imports to meet its demand. The 2023 yala season saw 3,500 hectares dedicated to onion farming, though the yield was adversely affected by heavy rainfall before harvest, as reported by the Department of Agriculture. The need for imports is underscored by the sustained demand ahead of numerous religious and cultural festivals.
