Concerns rise over wastewater plans in Kelowna

In Kelowna, B.C., Ellison neighborhood residents are expressing concerns over Sandher Fruit Packers' proposal to discharge wastewater into a local ditch. The Ministry of Environment has been involved, with inspectors finding that effluent from the company's operations had previously been released into the environment. This has led to a pending financial decision, while the company seeks approval to dispose of wastewater weekly, amounting to the volume of 2,800 wheelbarrows.

Alexandra Wright, a local resident and business owner near Sandher Fruit Packers, has initiated a petition to challenge the company's practices and is advocating for a boycott by local grocery stores.

In 2022, the Ministry of Environment imposed a $32,000 fine on Sandher Fruit Packers for breaches of waste discharge regulations between August 17, 2019, and April 12, 2022. The company is now applying for permission to legally discharge its wastewater, sparking further community action.
