Some 2.3 million trays expected to be picked

Northern Territory mango season is underway

The Northern Territory's mango season is underway; 23,000 trays of fruit were sent to southern markets last week. The Australian Mango Industry Association predicts that the Darwin region will produce about 2.3 million trays this year, down from about 2.6 million last season.

The peak of the Darwin season is due in mid-October, but already there are a small number of growers already sending ripe Kensington Pride mangoes to market.

Red Rich Fruits managing director Matt Palise said it was shaping up to be a challenging season, with a stop-start harvest. Palise said the company's yields could be down about 40 per cent on last year's crop, but ABC Rural has spoken to other growers who are expecting a more favourable season. Early season mangoes have been selling for about $70 to $90 per tray, but prices will ease as more fruit enters the market.
