"We must strive for self-sufficiency in potatoes and other fruits and vegetables"

On the occasion of the 63rd foundation day of Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized the importance of diversifying agricultural production beyond rice. He urged the agricultural scientists and students at OUAT to support local farmers in enhancing the cultivation of non-paddy crops, including vegetables. Highlighting the state's achievement in rice self-sufficiency, Majhi pointed out the necessity of expanding into oilseeds, vegetables, fruits and flowers to ensure broader agricultural self-reliance. He underscored the critical role of OUAT in this endeavor, particularly in the production of quality seeds through advanced technology.

The chief minister also addressed the ongoing potato supply issue, which has been exacerbated by trade restrictions from the West Bengal government. He advocated for an increase in potato production within Odisha to reduce dependence on external sources. Furthermore, Majhi reiterated his government's commitment to expanding cold storage facilities across the state. Plans are underway to establish these essential infrastructures in 54 sub-divisions by the end of the current financial year, with a long-term goal to cover all 314 blocks within five years.
