According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, cranberry growers in southern Massachusetts are set to experience a productive harvest season. The forecast suggests an output of approximately 2.2 million 100-pound barrels for Massachusetts, marking a 12% increase from the previous year's yield of around 1,936,000 barrels.
Brian Wick, Executive Director of Massachusetts Cranberries, highlighted the positive sentiment among growers following a less favourable yield last season. Massachusetts Cranberries, originally known as Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association since 1888, advocates for growers in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and Nantucket. The state stands as the second-largest cranberry producer in the U.S., contributing about 6,400 jobs and $1.7 billion annually to the local economy.
The expected national cranberry production is estimated at 8.24 million barrels, a slight increase of two percent over the previous year. Despite challenges posed by recent hot and humid weather conditions, which may impact the final yield below the optimistic USDA estimates, favourable conditions and the expertise of Massachusetts growers are anticipated to ensure a successful harvest season.
