Brazil's orange and tangerine imports increase

The 2024/25 crop-year for orange juice exports in Brazil commenced in July, with exports continuing at a reduced rate, a trend that aligns with the limited supply stemming from a smaller orange production in São Paulo and Triângulo Mineiro. Concurrently, Brazil saw an increase in imports of oranges and tangerines in July.

In July, Brazil exported 53.4 thousand tons of orange juice, marking a 38% decrease from July 2023, according to Comex Stat data. Despite the drop in volume, the revenue from these exports rose to USD 198.9 million, a 9% increase from the previous year. NFC orange juice exports stood at 164.2 thousand tons, generating USD 96.45 million in revenue, reflecting a 3% and 55% increase respectively from July 2023. FCOJ exports saw a significant decrease to 23.6 thousand tons, with revenue falling to USD 102.4 million, a 15% decrease year-on-year.

On the import front, orange imports reached record levels, driven by the scant domestic supply and elevated prices of local fruits. From January to July, imports totalled 34.8 thousand tons, an 87% increase from the previous year, with expenses surging to USD 24.7 million. Tangerine imports also saw a dramatic rise, with 14.5 thousand tons imported, a 96% increase from the previous year, and expenses reaching USD 15.65 million.

Domestically, the demand for citrus fruits is expected to push prices up in August, despite the peak orange season. The majority of the harvest is being directed towards juice production due to high prices offered by factories, leading many producers to shift from the fresh market to processing activities. This shift occurs even as demand remains subdued due to mild temperatures.
