According to the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (Midagri), garlic prices have increased mainly due to weather issues, specifically the strong heat during the planting season. The heat generated complications in the planting and development of the crop, affecting supply and, consequently, its price on the market.
The drop in the supply of the different varieties of garlic to the distribution centers has caused an increase in prices. The decrease in revenues of this product has resulted in limited availability, with stocks barely reaching 50% of their total capacity. Midagri expects supply to normalize in the coming weeks as more product is harvested and the sector can meet the demand of merchants and consumers affected by this situation.
The Ministry also expects the stabilization in supply will contribute to a reduction in garlic prices, which will be gradually reflected in the price consumers pay for this product.
