Wholesale price dynamics in India's key markets

Last week, Lasalgaon APMC witnessed 21% increase in the average wholesale price of onions

In the past week, Lasalgaon APMC, India's largest onion market, witnessed a 21% increase in the average wholesale price of onions. Conversely, Pimpalgaon APMC, the country's top market for tomatoes, experienced a 30% decrease in the average wholesale price of tomatoes.

The fluctuation in onion prices is attributed to an enhanced domestic demand surpassing supply. For tomatoes, an increase in supply over demand led to the price reduction. Specifically, onion prices in Lasalgaon escalated from Rs2,725 to Rs3,300 per 100 kg within a week, amidst a decrease in arrivals to 900 tons daily from the usual 1,500 tons, largely due to adverse weather conditions.

Manoj Jain, an onion trader, noted, "Export demand from Sri Lanka has risen in recent days alongside demand in domestic markets." Meanwhile, tomato prices in Pimpalgaon dropped from Rs461 to 350 per crate (20kg) over the same timeframe.
