Following a disruption in potato supplies from West Bengal due to a strike, the Odisha government shifted its focus to Uttar Pradesh for its potato procurement and is now considering Punjab as a potential source. The halt in imports from West Bengal led to a significant increase in potato prices in Odisha, prompting the state government to seek alternative sources to stabilize the market.
Last week, the supply chain was interrupted, and Odisha accused West Bengal authorities and political workers of extortion at the border, leading to a spike in prices within Odisha. The situation in the markets of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack saw prices fluctuating, with a notable increase to Rs 60 per kg, later dropping to Rs 35 a kg after potatoes were sourced from Uttar Pradesh. However, prices surged again to Rs 50 per kg due to dwindling stocks, attributed to the ongoing issues with West Bengal.
Traders in Odisha faced challenges with the supply from Uttar Pradesh as well, citing concerns over potential damage due to rain and high transportation costs. The Odisha government is urged to provide support, such as transportation subsidies, to mitigate these risks. Additionally, there's a proposal for bulk procurement through railways and utilization of the state's cold storage facilities, which can accommodate up to 10,000 tonnes, to further ease price volatility in the market.
The state's efforts to diversify its potato procurement sources aim to ensure a stable supply and prevent future price spikes in the essential commodity. The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister of Odisha has indicated that the government is prepared to procure potatoes from Punjab if necessary to achieve this goal.
