Farmers warn of price hikes in fresh produce in Cyprus

The farmers' association warned of price hikes in fresh produce if no action is taken to help farmers cope with rising temperatures and protect crops and livestock from fires.

General Secretary Panicos Hambas said that recent fires in Farmakas damaged fruit trees and agricultural infrastructure like generators. Hambas stated, "Farmakas is a key player in Cypriot agriculture," and emphasized the need for an advance payment scheme to help local farmers recover.

Hambas noted that extreme heat has also affected black eyed pea growers, with damaged cultivations leading to potential price increases. Watermelon quantity and quality have diminished even in new market areas like Kiti. "We are bracing for unreal prices," he warned.

Hambas stressed the need for government plans to manage agricultural land and redistribute abandoned farming areas in the Troodos foothills. He mentioned that the removal of citrus plantations in Astromeritis has increased temperatures by 4C.

The farmers' association is in talks with the government to revitalize rural areas by improving infrastructure, schools, medical centers, and recreation to attract youth. Farmers are also participating in a European scheme to plant 13,000 olive and carob trees surrounded by herb bushes to retain moisture and cool the air.
