The Ministry of Justice and Interior has initiated "Operation Horta" to enhance the traceability of fruit and vegetable products in the Valencian Community, focusing on items that lack legal accreditation. This operation, which began in March due to a rise in thefts and is set to continue through June, encompasses efforts to ensure adherence to labor, business, and environmental laws, alongside inspecting locations that might deal in stolen agricultural equipment.
Elisa Núñez outlined that the operation involves police monitoring at strategic points to both identify suspects and deter illegal activities, utilizing both helicopters and drones for surveillance. "Operation Horta" is structured in three phases, starting with gathering information to identify critical areas and times for surveillance, followed by establishing cooperation protocols with local and national law enforcement, and finally engaging with local producers, workers, and residents.
The focus of the operation is on seasonal produce specific to various regions within Valencia, including Caudiel cherries, L'Horta Nord and Sud loquats, and melons and watermelons, among other fruits and vegetables susceptible to theft.
