David Levin, CEO Zohara Farms:

“Israel's figs in super high demand”

Israel’s figs are in “super high demand” in especially Europe says David Levin, the CEO and marketing director of Zohara Farms. The company grows and exports brown figs during the two growing seasons in Israel.

“Zohara farms is back in action with brown figs. Demand is very high, super high in fact. This is because of the appearance and the taste. We always insists on taste. We manage to bring the accurate ripeness to our consumers, which convince them to come back and buy a second time.”

The markets for Israel’s figs include the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada as well as Asia. The Brown Turkey variety of figs is currently being air freighted from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport to all these countries says Levin.

“We try to carry on by focusing on the right time to harvest only when the figs are truly rip. We pay a lot of attention to the training and harvest skills of our workers. We place a lot of focus on the people who are harvesting. We go with them to the various plots and make sure they harvest at the correct time. This is done in order to convey the right appearance and taste to the end consumer,” explains Levin.

He describes their supply of figs as a niche product with fairly limited volumes available. “We supply and choose our long term clients very carefully. They include the leading retailers and wholesalers in Europe and the UK who really appreciate the fact that our figs are carefully chosen. We don’t move volume but select on taste and appearance. Taste is very crucial. Today a client in Germany told us he waited especially for our product,” says Levin.
