For Johann Köster Ltd & Co. KG from Lilienthal, the citrus fruit season has started well. Currently, the company sells oranges and clementines of the Tobsine brand, among others. "We get the fruits from the Spanish region of Valencia. Currently, their quality is quite good. Demand is also very good, especially since many want to use healthier products during the pandemic," says Managing Director Detlev Köster. The products are sold exclusively in the greater Bremen area.
The season for oranges started in week 45 and they will be on offer until the end of April. Clementines started about two to three weeks earlier. Among the oranges, Köster offers Navel, Navel Late and Navelina varieties. Regarding clementines, their are, again, varieties such as Marisol.
However, with infection numbers on the rise, many operators, like Köster, are concerned about where the future will take them. "Infection numbers are now rising rapidly, and I'm concerned that people would rather forget that we still have to deal with Corona."
Like many other operations, Köster has been affected by high costs. "For sure, we will have to raise prices sooner or later, although this is of course not easily feasible either. But it will probably take a while before everyone realizes at some point that we are bearing additional extra costs. We'll all have to go a little higher with the costing to better absorb the costs."
