“Spain becomes a formidable competitor for Florida grapefruit”

“Florida grapefruits have been available for some weeks now, and the market situation is satisfactory. The season started slightly later, but volumes are comparable and the fruit’s quality is terrific. Sales are as normal. It is remarkable this year that sizes are smaller than in recent years,” says Cédric Geens from W. Jonckheere. “Other than that, I expect a fairly regular season.”

Fluctuating dollar
Production volume is 10 to 15 per cent lower in Florida this year because of Hurricane Matthew, but according to Geens, supply is unchanged. “However, prices are subject to the fluctuating dollar. The rate is unfavourable for us compared with the dollar, and considering we pay our suppliers in dollars, we pay about 10 per cent more than last year. The price is now 22 euro for size 56 and 24 euro for 48ers.”

Spain a formidable competitor
Currently, Jonckheere offers Star Ruby and Ruby Red. The white grapefruits are expected later. Geens sees the share of Spanish grapefruit increasing on the European market. “I must say, in all honesty, that Spain is becoming a formidable competitor. Quality is not comparable to the Florida grapefruit, but it is still definitely good. They are available for half the price, and so an increasing part of the European market chooses Spanish grapefruit. I have not yet seen preferences change in Belgium. They continue to show an interest in Florida despite higher prices.”
