Low aubergine prices offset by high pepper prices in Poland
The good news for growers is that the weather has been good, with temperatures around 30 degrees, which has been perfect for all of the vegetables currently in season.
Andrzej Mierzejewski from Cool Fruit said that although prices have increased for bell peppers, volumes have generally stayed the same.
"Things are really picking up with the start of red pepper exports. We sent out 6 trucks this week to one of the biggest retailers in Poland, along with some red peppers to Holland. We had only been sending green peppers to the Netherlands and the UK before this week, along with some yellow. We have also starting exporting peppers to Scandinavia which is a newer market for us. We started exporting to Norway and Sweden last year and will continue with peppers while we are busy getting to know the market." said Mierzejewski.
With the season starting mid-May and ending in mid-October, aubergines are mainly sent to the domestic market, along with some exports to the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
"We would also like to send our aubergines to Holland, but since the prices in the Netherlands are good and they have their own production for the domestic market, it isn't worthwhile for us to enter the market this season." continued Mierzejewski.
"For aubergines, the Polish market is not open to new varieties and new shapes. You see other types in the supermarkets from time to time, but in general, it is always the same seeds, the same shape and varieties, the market is very traditional." said Mierzejewski.
Quality is good, that has not been an issue, but prices have been down by as much as 10 to 15% compared to last year.
"We have our own crop which we can offer to our customers, retailers and exporters, so we haven't been as affected as much as others who have to absorb transport costs and things like that."
