Organic farming grows globally

At the end of 2014 43.7 million hectare of land was farmed organically. And, except in South America, the organically farmed land increased on all continents. 

According to Research Institute of Organic farming (Fibl) and IFOAM the 43.7 million hectares of organic production area at the end of 2014 is a half million hectare higher compared to the previous year.

40% of the acreage is situated in Oceania. With 17.2 million hectares, Australia is number 1 in the ranking, followed by Argentina with 3.1 million hectares.

Seventh place for Switzerland
The Falkland Islands has the highest proportion of organic farmed land with 36.3%, followed by Liechtenstein (30.9%) and Austria (19.4%). Switzerland can be found in seventh place with 12.7%.

The value of the organic trade increases too. The value is estimated at 60 billion Euros, the majority of the value, 27.1 billion Euro, is earned in the USA. Switzerland takes the seventh place again, with 1.8 billion Euro.
