Currently, 80 producers in 32 villages in Cajamarca, which are associated with the Avocado Growers Association of Cajamarca and Tolima (Aguacatec), and that have received support from the municipal administration, experts in avocado crops, and some private sector companies, have planted 40,000 trees, 20,000 of which are already in production.
According to the mayor of the municipality, Luis Evelio Gomez, these results are due to an initiative of five years ago, in which about one hundred families started working on the cultivation of this product. Currently, producers have managed to produce large quantities of this crop and export it to Europe, China, and the United States; thanks to the product quality the producers have achieved through their dedication and hard work.
In this regard, and in order to improve their crops and production, 21 producers are conducting a project that will allow them to be certified in Good Agricultural Practices, through the ICA Agricultural Institute. Their goal is to achieve compliance with the requirements in the handling of the avocado crop so they can expand their market scenarios and sales.
Luis Evelio Gomez also said the avocado producers of Has de Cajamarca were very committed to their crops and that they were convinced that the guacamole made with avocado in the region might also be exported to other countries very soon.
