EU restriction on Uganda's pepper impacts export
The commodities that are most in focus are hot peppers, which represent the majority of interceptions that have been made due to the presence of a pest known as false codling moth.
Addressing the issue
For some years, a number of Uganda's agricultural commodities have been found to violate EU's rules on plant health. Prominent among these is hot pepper.
To take this matter forward, the EU is planning an audit of the phytosanitary controls at Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.
This measure, if implemented, will culminate into loss of jobs and affect the image of Uganda as a source of agricultural commodities for export.
