Part of the banana sector is looking to have a competitive advantage in the international market through their environmental practices.
Six producers and exporters of bananas participated in a pilot project that will allow them to know how much pollution their crops produce, so that they can take corrective actions when necessary.
The Promotion of Exports and Investments Corporation (Corpei), the Export Promotion Institute (Pro Ecuador), and the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) drove the plan for twelve months and presented the results yesterday in Guayaquil.
The results are individual, said Asier Sopelana, a consultant to the entities. According to him, every person and process generates a carbon footprint, i.e., an amount of greenhouse gases.
The president of Corpei, Ricardo Estrada, said that this indicator would provide farmers a competitive advantage over their competitors. For example, he said, the European market is very demanding regarding environmental issues.
Estrada said that many banana producers had not participated in the project because it was a pilot, but that he hoped other producers would be interested in it.
The Regional Banana Corporation (Agroban) has forty members, six of which participated in the pilot project.
