Arjan Freriks, Hagranop:

"High carrot export rather extraordinary"

The harvest of keeping carrots has been in full swing for a few weeks now. After next week, it will be as good as done, says Arjan Freriks of Hagranop. "The harvest went well. Following a period of rain, the weather conditions have been good from the start of the storing carrot harvest until now." He says the yields in the Netherlands vary a lot. "In the north, crate yields are good. In the Flevopolders it varies, but on average it's lower. The same goes for the southwest. All in all, nationally yields are lower."

Friendly market
Arjan notes that the carrot trade is positive. "It's nice to work in such a friendly market. There is high demand for carrot in surrounding countries like Germany, Belgium and Eastern Europe. At the moment these countries don't have their own carrots yet, but here yields are a lot lower too. You immediately see this in the good prices. Prices for the B carrot are around 16 to 17 cents. Large carrots go towards 18 cents, but at the moment supply of those is lower."

Export
At the moment there is export to countries in Eastern Europe, but also overseas, like Africa. "Export has gone on all summer. It's pretty extraordinary that there's been so much export already this season. Plots that are less suitable for keeping are already gone. Normally you can harvest there until December. It's all very positive there. For the near future, we see continuing demand in the market as well. "Many countries have lower yields, so we expect an early demand for our cold store carrot."
