Italy: High prices for courgettes

Wholesale courgette prices keep on increasing. Quotations at the Centro Agro Alimentare di Bologna (CAAB) are quite high too, though they seem more stable.

"There are only a few white courgettes left, as harvesting in Calabria will start in a couple of weeks' time. Prices are of course affected, as they have reached €3-3.5/kg," explains wholesaler Cenerini.

"The local produce is finishing and that from Campania, Calabria and Sicily is not available yet."

Prices are high even for the darker courgettes. "Category I courgettes over between €1-70-1.80/kg, whereas Category II produce from Fondi is sold at around €1/kg. The campaign is now ending in Fondi and then it will be the turn of Sicily. Prices will be rather high but constant, as it usually happens during winter. Prices of white courgettes will also stabilise at around €3-3.5/kg."
