The Honeycrunch season has been going for a while now, and will last until April. In Belgium, importer W. Jonckheere is the distributor for these apples. The company is known for its range of exclusive products. "That's why we chose this special apple. Starting this year, we will convince the Belgians that the Honeycrunch is a delicious variety," says Cédric Geens of Jonckheere. "From September until early November, the Honeycrunch is a sort of a 'replacement' for the Pink Lady, and that's when demand is extra high."
Exclusive
There are already many different apples available in Belgium. So why add a new variety to the product range? "First of all because it's a super apple, and buyers are pleased with the 'crunchy' taste. In addition, it's also a club variety of course, which has its advantages. There's a lot of marketing surrounding the Honeycrunch. And not everyone is allowed to sell the product: certain traders get exclusivity to market it. Finally, there is a strong follow-up for the product, guaranteeing 100% quality towards the customer."
The Honeycrunch apple originated in America. In Europe, the variety is mainly grown in France and Germany. All in all, the production volume in France and Germany is around 18,000 tonnes. Within 8 years, they want to produce double that amount. The company also has Ocean Spray cranberries in its product range, and will start again with the Florida Grapefruit from the end of October on. W. Jonckheere is the exclusive importer of Florida Grapefruit of the Indian River Dolphin brand in Belgium.
