Andries van den Bogert, Van Dommele:

Early Spanish tangerines doing well

The Spanish tangerine season is off to a good start at Van Dommele with the first Okitsu's (Famisa brand), "We started a little later and have barely had any problems," says Andries van den Bogert. "However, we have a relatively large supply of the bigger sizes and we cannot always meet the demand for the smaller sizes."

Prices for the first tangerines are slightly better than last year, "Harvest volumes are much lower and that will be the case with the following varieties as well. That has an impact on the prices. Last year the supply of South African citrus lasted much longer and now there is a huge shortage there."

Van Dommele carries the exclusive brands Marie Jose and Nr5 for the early Clementines, "There are limited volumes, but specialists can really distinguish themselves here. There is always a need for something different in the market," says Andries. Although Navels are already on the market, Van Dommele will wait another week or two until the oranges are well seasoned.

"The transition to this season went very well. The cold, dry weather that we are experiencing now stimulates citrus consumption. People are looking for citrus left and right. Let the winter come," says Andries.
