Lower Saxony, Germany: good onion harvest, low prices

Onion growers from the German state of Lower Saxony are pleased with the excellent quality of the harvest this year, only now they are faced with low prices, reports the German website topagrar.com.

"We often can't cover the costs," says grower Günter Primke. For the next couple of weeks however, he is counting on a slight price increase. The Agricultural organization 'Landvolk Niedersachsen' (People of Lower Saxony) reported a 16% greater harvest than last year, citing numbers from the Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) (Agricultural Market Information Company).

Since other regions also harvested large volumes of onions, the prices for growers are currently unsatisfactory, says the 'Landvolk Niedersachsen'. However, for the consumer, the good harvest means a wide range of domestic onions at favourable prices.
