Sweet Cherry of the U.S. season finale in Asia

Sweet cherries of the U.S. had a good 2014 season, last week the USDA gave an update of the estimated export volume, where is mentioned that the total export of sweet cherries this season reached 89,000 tons, 33% more than the previous season.

The exports distribution maintained the top four places (showing the table), representing 85% of the total exports, and the main changes were given by Japan, Australia and the UK, that showed drops in their imports.

What happened in China/HK?

iQonsulting estimated that these countries, between the months of April and September, received about 18,500 tons, or 61% more fruit than in 2013. Also like Chile, Hong Kong's participation has shown a marked downward trend in the recent seasons.

Prices were better than expected and they had almost the same behavior as in Chile during the 2013/14 season, with the only exception that the average prices recorded in the first two weeks, were not as high as those recorded by the Southern Hemisphere country. Thereafter a slow decline began from 600 RMB/box to the 300 RMB/box recorded in week 33, where an increase started until the end of season on week 36, overshadowed only by the emergence of the Canadian supply.

The demand for sweet cherries in the market for China / HK is growing, predicting a great future for the next season of Chile.
