"Edeka CEO: "Private label suppliers a benchmark for A-brands"

Edeka CEO Markus Mosa has called on the A-brand manufacturers to usemosa private label suppliers as a benchmark in terms of efficiency and flexibility.

Lebensmittel Zeitung reports that Mosa said the German co-operative grocer is seeking innovation and products that offer real value for both customers and Edeka's own independent retailers, “If the industry is incapable of doing so, we will do it ourselves,” he said.

During the year June 2011 to June 2012, the retailer saw a growth of 12.3 per cent in private label products, compared to a smaller 3.9 per cent increase in sales of A-brand products. The Edeka boss added, “Edeka is the largest provider of brands in German retail, and that’s what we want to stay.”

However, Mosa called for better buying conditions and dismissed manufacturer request for higher prices due to rising commodity costs.
