Mexico: US market saturated with low quality limes

The president of the National Executive Committee of Sistema Producto Limón Persa, César Cortés Bello, accused the packing industry of saturating the US market with a low quality product.

He said that this has caused a drop in the price of limes in the United States, the main importer of this citrus.

According to the newspaper El Golfo de México, the price of a box of Persian limes has gone from 70 to 25 pesos in just a few days.

Cortés Bello lamented the fact that many packers ignored previous warnings and shipped a low quality product towards that country.

"Packers were warned not to ship small lemons, as that would cause a problem with the quality and reduce demand from our main client," he stated.

He highlighted that this drop in rates will significantly affect the State of Veracruz, as it is the largest producer of Persian lemons, with 68% of the annual production, and where 82 of the 100 packing plants in the whole country are located.
