US: American hospital takes organic cultivation to new heights

On Monday, the 10th of September, a fund raiser for an organic roof garden was held four storeys above ground level. The Brook Heights roof garden belongs to the 'Stony Brook's Health Sciences Center'.

Dozens of people were present at the event. They could sample different meals that were prepared using vegetables and herbs from the garden. Hundreds of kilos of food was produced in Stony Creek last growing season. The communal gardening program is funded by an endowment from the 'Department of Health'.

The grants of 82,000 dollar in five year's time, will stop soon. That's why the company's management started raising funds to be able to continue its activities.

"We really need more means to continue this project. We want to use the garden to inform our patients about the need to include vegetables and herbs in their diet once they have been discharged," says Josephine Connolly Schoonen of the hospital's nutritional department.

Thirty three varieties of vegetables and herbs are grown in the garden. "It is a project that can make everyone feel good."
