"Belgium: "Fantastic summer season for Charentais-melons"
Importer W.Jonckheere is amongst others, known for the Charantais-melons of hallmark Philibon. "These certainly will be available till the end of September. Last week I was in France for a few days and the weather was first class there. As a result large volumes are being harvested," Cédric Geens tells. "On average our supplier Boyer harvests 300 tons daily. Boyer is the largest player in Charantais-melons in France and produces and exports other fruit and vegetables as well."
Laser labelling of melons
The melons of the variety Charantais come from the south of France. This year Jonckheere introduced something new: the products were marketed in a special way using laser labelling. "The reactions were very positive," Cedric mentions. "Because of this new way of marketing and the good products we can look back at a fantastic summer season. Good volumes have been sold."
In addition to melons supplier Boyer also produces plums and Chasselas grapes. These come from the region Moissac and have typical characteristics. They are small grapes with seeds and are very sweet. They were very popular previously, but that decreases all the time. About ten years ago about 20,000 tonnes were still produced and that is now only 4,000 tonnes annually. They are less appreciated because seedless grapes are more popular."
After September other products are of importance at Jonckheere, such as grapefruit from Florida and cranberries of hallmark Ocean Spray.
