UK: Challenging strawberry season for growers

It has been a challenging season for strawberry growers according to John Gray from Angus Soft Fruits, UK. Although as he explains, quality has been as good as ever, losses have increased due to increased levels of botrytis caused by high humidity levels. Size has also been a bit under pressure but sugar levels are generally good.

The season is running about 10 days behind as has been the case since the start of the season, Angus soft Fruits, who mainly grow in Scotland have about 4-6 weeks remaining. Prices have been lower than average this year, with lower net returns for the growers.

The supermarkets have been doing some promotions with varying degrees of success. The main problem has been lower demand even throughout the traditionally busy Wimbledon fortnight in June. That said the business has had a boost due to increased volumes of its new strawberry variety Islay which is also sold under Angus Soft Fruits' Good Natured brand of pesticide residue free, which has seen sales increase by over 40%.

The recent better weather is probably too little to late to lift the end of the season.
