Spain: Increase in melon and watermelon harvests
Watermelon production this season has reached 350,000 tonnes, representing a 16.9% increase compared to 2011. In the case of melons, the production surpassed 135,000 tonnes, which is 4.5% more than in 2011.
However, this increase in production, along with low demand in Europe and tougher competition from Greece, Italy, Turkey and other Spanish provinces, such as Murcia and Seville, has driven prices down. Still without definitive data, the total value of the watermelon harvest is expected to reach 94 million Euro, a 4.5% increase.
Regarding melons, the value obtained by growers has been of 59 million Euro, up 22%.
Additionally, melons and watermelons commercialized this campaign by the province's horticultural sector have successfully passed all maturity controls carried out by the quality inspectors from the Delegation of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment.
