first apples harvested

Germany: Bodensee appleharvest -10%

On the German Bodensee growers have already picked the first apples, reports the German website Proplanta.de "Some colleagues have already begun with the harvest," says Peter Triloff of the`Marktgemeinschaft Bodenseeobst' in Friedrichshafen. "This, however, is only with the early varieties such as Delbarestivale. Other apples such as Gala and Elstar are usually only harvested in the first week in September.

This year, growers reckon that the Bodensee harvest will be about ten percent lower than the usual harvest of approximately 250,000 tons. "Last year we had a record harvest in many varieties. This gives always gives less blossom the following year," says Triloff. "On top of this much of the blossom froze at Easter in some areas. However, this was offset by a massive pollination by insects."
