Colombia: The strawberry, a profitable fruit.

Colombia’s strawberry production is on track compared to previous years. The last seven years strawberry fields have grown steadily, from 791 ha in 2004 to 1300 ha between 2008 and 2011, making this crop a 1% contributor to Colombia’s total fruit segment. In 2010, 1798 ha of strawberries was harvested, leading up to 43,254 tons. Right now, Cundinamarca, Antioquia, Norte de Santander, Boyaca, Cauca, Caquetá, Nariño, Quindio, Santander and Valle de Cauca are the dominant areas of the fruit’s cultivation.

According to recent statistics, Colombia made around 193 million dollars from export last year. So far, 2012 is heading to 140 million.

The biggest takers of Colombian strawberries are the Dutch Antilles and Panama with 39%, followed by Aruba with 21% and Spain with 1%, all of whom represent 337,354 kilos of exported goods.
