Marc de Kimpe, Kimco:

"With nice weather the carrot market would have been worse"

It is quiet on the carrot market. "This is mainly the result of the holiday period" Marc de Kimpe of Kimco observes. "But it is actually not bad. If it has been nice sunny weather now, it would not have been so good for our carrots."

Kimco have an area of 300 HA of carrots and 45 HA of onions in Belgium. In addition to carrots and onions Kimco also process garlic and shallots and this for both local trading and abroad. The annual production amounts to 40 million kgs. of carrots and
8 million kgs. of onions. "Not too many carrots are exported at the moment, Whatever is sold now is mainly for the interior. During the last few years our countries of export have become more and more self-sufficient. Export within Europe is more difficult each year. Our clients have sufficient carrots at the moment. Possibly the market will improve again within a few weeks."

"Prices are at a good level for the time of the year and the quality of the new harvest is good. There are no more old carrots on the market now."
