Germany: Less cherries in Thüringen

Not just the strawberry harvest is in full swing in the German state Thüringen. The cherry harvest has also started here, reports the German website proplanta.de.

But the fruit growers are pessimistic about the yield of sweet cherries. "We will probably harvest 20 to 30 percent less than last year", says Axel Swoboda, fruit cultivation expert of the Landesverband Gartenbau. The reasons for the later harvest are the strong frost at the beginning of February and the night frost during the blooming period.

Harvesting sweet cherries is pure manual labour. But there are enough willing hands. Sweet cherries are grown on over 200 hectares in Thüringen.
