Spain: Strawberry campaign ends with 20% raise in production

The Strawberry campaign in Huelva, supposedly representing 94% of the national total, ended with a raise in production between 20 and 25% compared to the previous one, when 245,000 tons were harvested.

That's what Alberto Garrocho, president for the Strawberry Producers and Exporters Association (Freshuelva) showed, while assuring that the harvesting is finished in the farms in the province. Waiting for the definitive results, to be released in 15 or 20 days, Garrocho qualified the present campaign as "acceptable".

In that sense, he explained that even if the production took longer, raising it by 20 to 25%, prices per kilo were "somewhat inferior" to last year's - 8 to 10 Euro cents. Adding this drop in prices there's a raise in costs with wages supported by many farmers as they needed more workers to harvest the bigger production.
