Germany: good demand for iceberg lettuce
In Germany there was such a strong demand for iceberg lettuce in week 22 that the German producers could harly satisfy the demand. This as announced by the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. The local demand already noticeably increased in week 21 and this tendency continued in week 22.
The large German suppliers also mentioned a greater demand from other European countries: from Scandinavia and Great Britain to South and Eastern Europe. Many requests came too late. In general the market is in short supply at moment. Lettuce is even harvested early at the moment, although the weather conditions this summer have done a lot of good.
The German growers and traders are in a good position at the moment as far as the market situation is concerned, something that does not happen all that often. As a result one is now in a position to demand with a certain self-awareness, good prices and an allowance of about 5 cents each.
