Mexican citrus producers expect a good production

Orange production during the 2012-2013 cycle could reach 500,000 tons, which could relax thousands of producers that were affected by the intense drought that affected the state, informed Luis Lauro Carrillo Soto.

The president for the Agricultural Regional Union of Citrus Producers pointed out that according to flowering in the citrus acreage, estimated at about 40,000 hectares, "this might be an excellent year for the sector".

From the start of the early orange harvest for the next four months the production will vary between 450,000 and 500,000 tons as there was no big period without rain.

"Harvest expectations are excellent and bring some hopes to farmers, specially because the 2011-2012 cycle was the worst since 1997. Where only 200,000 tons were produced due to the drought from one year ago having seriously affected the orchards. The average production was between 15 to 20 tons per hectare, but only 3 or 4 tons were lifted", he pointed out.
