Japan: Aeon supermarkets to open earlier

Aeon Co. will open its more than 1,400 supermarkets throughout the country at 7 a.m., two hours earlier than usual, this summer for consumers who change their daily routine as the nation moves into a power-saving mode, according to sources.

The nation's biggest retailer is counting on people who may want to shop in cooler hours in the morning or before going to work when some businesses are expected to move up their starting hours to save electricity, the sources said.

Aeon is planning to implement the earlier hours from June 1 to early September at its general merchandise shops, MaxValu food supermarkets and other group stores, except for a limited number of outlets, the sources said.

No changes are planned for the closing hours. The group, however, will keep electricity consumption at last year's level or even lower by increasing the use of power-saving lighting, for instance.
