NL: Quality problema as Peruvian mango season ends

At Starfruit the Peruvian mango season is almost over. "We will still have them in the assortment for a little over a week and then the Ivory Coast start again" Ive Lambert says. Quality wise the mangoes are still good, but in Peru it is a little more difficult to sort compared to a few weeks ago. However, they take care that fruit of 100% quality arrives here."

Mangoes are arriving by sea and by air at Starfruit. "The large price difference between the two is striking. The price of airfreight mangoes is about 32 Euro for 6 kgs. The others are between 5.50 and 7 Euro depending on size."

Quality problems
According to Ive the season was rather changing. "First of all there were a lot less volumes than last year. In general the quality was good, but unfortunately during the last few weeks there are more and more quality problems. Especially at the end of the Piura season this was a problem. Now the mangoes are still from the region Casma and here it is a lot better although there we also have mangoes of lesser quality."

Shortly the first mangoes from Ivory Coast will arrive again. "At the moment Kent are being packed there and we expect the first in about ten days' time." Ive explains that the demand in Belgium is mainly for Kent and hardly for Tommy's. These are more difficult to sell here. Therefore we mainly supply the variety Kent. The taste is a lot better."
