Costa Rica to compete with Nicaragua in mango exports
Principally this will involve sales to the United States, with the added benefit if not having to worry about whether or not the fruit shows signs of scarring and bruising.
When first hearing of the facility, the Promoter of External Commerce (Procomer) made comparisons between the mango exports of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, by using data from the Secretary of Centro-American Economic Integration (SIECA).
In 2011, CR mango exports reached 8.4 million Dollars, - double 2010; - while last year Nicaragua sold 3.4 million Dollars worth.
Costa Rica is concerned that Nicaragua will focus mango exports to the same destinations: the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States.
"Even if it's important for the exporting sector to pay attention to the competition so we are not surprised by it, in this case, the possibility of a raise in mango exports by Nicaragua to markets like the US or Central America, it's more important to know the way this competition is being developed, with the objective of searching for a constant improvement in production practices and techniques", said a representative of Procomer.
In that sense, the settling of this plant in Nicaragua will allow the use of mango, that was not accepted before in those markets, to be exported with added value "of a differentiate factor to the several markets".
