Chiquita Brands responded to statements by Raul HasbĂșn in which he critics the decision of the attorney to end the investigation in favor of the banana companies.
The multinational Chiquita Brands in Colombia welcomed the decision of the districts' attorney in Medellin of putting an end to the investigations against several banana companies in supporting the AUC.
''Chiquita learned in recent days that a Colombian prosecutor concluded an investigation that lasted more than four years, when clear evidence was found that Chiquita was forced to give in to extortion by the AUC," the statement said.
"This decision coincides with the result of various investigations that have been made by many entities and with what the company has said all along: we were victim of an extortion by the armed groups in Colombia.''
The company's statement is in response to what Raul HasbĂșn, former paramilitary, had considered an unfair decision to finish the investigation on the issue of banana business links with the AUC. "It was an agreement to commit a crime and the only one who was condemned is me," he said in an interview to portal verdadabierta.com.
